Biographical Note

Gallerist Curt Valentin was a leading purveyor of modern art and a major supplier of European modern painting and sculpture to American collectors. Valentin was born in 1902 in Hamburg, Germany. At the age of 21, he began his career by training with the legendary art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, one of the first champions of Cubism. Kahnweiler was also a friend of noted gallerist of modern art Alfred Flechtheim. In 1927, Valentin began working at Flechtheim's Galerie Simon in Paris, and subsequently became a director at Flechtheim's gallery in Berlin. During his time at these galleries, Valentin was exposed to some of the best modern art in Europe, including works from the Fauvism, Cubism, and Expressionism movements. The economic depredations of 1920s Germany forced Flechtheim to close several of his galleries, and in 1933, the Berlin site was shuttered to forestall bankruptcy.

In 1934, Valentin went to work for Karl Buchholz at the Buchholz Gallery in Berlin. He worked there until 1936, when Nuremberg Race Laws imposed by the Nazi government made it impossible for Valentin, a Jew, to remain employed. Valentin emigrated to New York City where he opened the Buchholz Gallery, New York, at 3 West 46th Street, his first exhibition opening on March 18th, 1937. In May 1938, the gallery moved to 32 East 57th Street. In the 1940's, Valentin exhibited a great number of artists, but most prominently Lyonel Feininger, Juan Gris, Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Jacques Lipchitz. In 1951, Valentin changed the name of his gallery from Buchholz Gallery to Curt Valentin Gallery. Along with the change in name, he also began to represent a more diverse group of artists, such as Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Marino Marini, Marc Chagall, and Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Valentin operated his gallery successfully until 1954, when he died unexpectedly of a heart attack on August 19th during a visit to Marino Marini in Forte de Marmi, Italy. The gallery remained open under the direction of Valentin's longtime assistant Jane Wade until 1955, when it closed for good. The last exhibition ended on September 1st, 1955. Valentin's estate was liquidated, and the remaining stock at his gallery was sold at the Parke-Bernet auction house in November 1955. During the 18 years the gallery was in operation, Valentin staged a total of 185 exhibitions.

Curt Valentin is regarded as one of the foremost promoters and purveyors of modernism in America, particularly of those works branded "degenerate" art by Germany's Nazi government which had been purged from state collections and confiscated from Jewish collectors. Karl Buchholz was one of the German art dealers appointed by the Nazi Propaganda Ministry to oversee the dispersal and sale of these works. Valentin received some of his stock from Buchholz to sell at his New York gallery until 1941 when the United States entered World War II.

Valentin, aside from being a successful art dealer and gallerist, also began to foster close friendships with the artists he worked with. Christmas cards, correspondence with doodles, and photographs of Valentin with artists are often found in his papers. He routinely spent Christmas with Henry Moore and his wife, and would frequently visit Marino Marini and his wife in Tuscany for the summer. Valentin first encountered art book publishing while working at the Buchholz Gallery, which was located above Karl Buchholz's bookstore, Buchhandlung Karl Buchholz. In New York, he tried his hand at publishing limited edition books such as Guernica, Pablo Picasso (folder I.160), Juan Gris (folder I.70), and The Drawings of Georges Seurat (folder I.192). Additionally, Valentin published original catalogues for each exhibition held. They were typically small stapled booklets with reproductions of works in the show alongside a full checklist.

Scope and Contents

The Curt Valentin Papers detail the operation of the Buchholz Gallery and the Curt Valentin Gallery, located in New York City from the years 1937-1954. The collection comprises exhibition documentation, loan and sale records, extensive correspondence, personal papers, and photographs. The records provide an in-depth look into the art world during a pivotal time in the spread of modern artworks to American collections, including The Museum of Modern Art. The material is especially rich in artist correspondence, detailed in Series III, and object photography, which can be found in Series IV and Series VIII.

Series I contains exhibition catalogues and documents relating to the exhibitions held at the Buchholz and Curt Valentin Gallery. Alongside the exhibition catalogues, this series also includes loan correspondence, artist correspondence, checklists, and receipts. It is organized by exhibition title, or artist name when an exhibition title isn't available. All folders contain an exhibition catalogue unless otherwise stated. Series II contains records relating to Valentin's foray into graphic prints. He published a small series of lithographs by Pablo Picasso between the years 1945 and 1948. This series also contains a catalogue for a public auction held in November 1955 titled Important Paintings by Modern Masters.

The bulk of this collection's correspondence can be found in Series III. It is divided into four subseries according to the type of correspondent, all arranged alphabetically by last name or institution name. Subseries III.A contains correspondence with artists. The series of folders titled "Beckmann Notebooks" refer to individual binders dedicated to strictly Max Beckmann correspondence. Subseries III.B contains correspondence with individual collectors and publishers. The third, fourth, and fifth subseries contain overlapping groups of correspondence. Subseries III.C contains correspondence largely with individual dealers and some galleries. Subseries III.D contains correspondence largely with museums, but also includes some dealers and galleries as well. Finally, subseries III.E contains correspondence primarily with academic institutions, but also includes some files of correspondence with museums, galleries, and individuals associated with universities.

Series IV is a set of photographs previously filed among the paper records – rather than with the photo albums and images that form Series VIII – and they have been kept in this position here. The files contain photographs of artworks and individuals and are arranged alphabetically by artist. Some are loose photographs and some are mounted to boards, similar to those in Series VIII which were previously housed in 3-ring binders. Series V contains newspaper clippings, with subseries V.A including those previously bound in albums, and subseries V.B loose clippings. Series VI concerns the liquidation of the Curt Valentin Gallery's assets. One folder of correspondence and other general business records can be found in VI.A, and in VI.B is one folder containing an inventory of Valentin's graphic arts holdings, which can also be found in Series II. Series VII holds the bulk of Valentin's business records. The first subseries, VII.A, contains correspondence. The second subseries, VII.B, contains documents concerning artworks "on approval," or on loan. This primarily includes correspondence and loan receipts. The third subseries, VII.C, contains artist's account statements, and the fourth subseries, VII.D, contains bills, receipts, and checks concerning the physical gallery space. The final subseries, VII.E, includes an accountant's report.

Series VIII is a new addition to this collection. It had been kept with the Photographic Archive at The Museum of Modern Art, part of the former Department of Rights and Reproductions, before it was transferred to the Archives department in 2004. This series contains a vast collection of object photography kept by Valentin, formerly housed in three ring binders. All photographs have been mounted on board and often contain adhesive labels with the artwork's details. The first subseries contains three folders of installation photography. While far from being a comprehensive documentation of all Valentin's exhibitions, these files document a significant number of shows. Installation photography can also be found in subseries VIII.B and is noted in the folder description when applicable. Subseries VIII.B contains photographs of artworks specifically exhibited by Valentin in his gallery, arranged by artist. The final subseries, VIII.C, contains a more general collection of work not specifically exhibited by Valentin but by artists he admired or worked with.

Administrative Information

Custodial History

The Curt Valentin Papers and the collection of Valentin's photo albums were a promised gift given to The Museum of Modern Art Library in 1956 by the executor of Valentin's will, Ralph Colin. The two collections were separated, the papers staying with the Library and the photo albums going to the former Department of Rights and Reproductions to be a part of the Photographic Archive. The Museum of Modern Art Archives was officially founded in 1989, and the papers were transferred from the Library to the Archives in 1998. When the Department of Rights and Reproductions (then known as the Department of Photographic Services and Permissions) was disbanded in 2003, the Photographic Archive, including the Curt Valentin photograph albums, was also transferred to the MoMA Archives. In 2020, the Archives received funding to reprocess and describe the Curt Valentin Papers and to officially incorporate the photo albums into the collection.

Preferred Citation

Published citations should take the following form:

Provenance

Upon the sudden death of Curt Valentin in 1954, and his gallery's subsequent closure in 1955, his paper records and photo albums were put in the possession of Ralph Colin, the executor of Valentin's estate and a close personal friend. In 1956, the papers were given to The Museum of Modern Art Library to house, and Colin would regularly correspond with the MoMA Library to grant permission for researcher access to the papers. Upon Colin's death in 1985, the Curt Valentin Papers became an official part of the MoMA Library.

Processing Note

Some of the paper records have been removed from binders and plastic sleeves while processing. All information on the binder's spines has been recorded. While most of the materials are in good condition, some more fragile documents have been interleaved with acid-free paper or placed in Mylar sleeves as appropriate. Photographs mounted on board previously housed in 3-ring photo albums have been removed from the binders and all information on the binder's spine has been recorded. All staples, paperclips, and binder clips have been removed.

Series III: Correspondence 1935-1956

Series III contains the bulk of Valentin's correspondence. The correspondence is broken down into four subseries: artists, individual collectors and publishers, museums and galleries, and academic institutions. The artist correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and includes gallery sales and invoices/checks, gallery and artist's inventories, account statements, and loan information. Aside from individual artists, correspondents also include family members, press, institutions, and occasionally potential buyers. The series of folders titled "Beckmann Notebooks" refer to individual binders dedicated to strictly Max Beckmann correspondence. Because Valentin worked so closely with Beckmann there is significantly more records compared to other artists in the collection, which presumably necessitated their own binders. Individual records have been enumerated in red pencil on the lower left corner, presumably at the time they were put in binders. Any gaps in numbering may indicate missing records or records that have been moved within the collection at the time of accession.

The second subseries, collectors and publishers, is also organized alphabetically but with some inconsistencies. Some folders are arranged by the representative rather than the institution and the institution has its own separate file. In these cases, the institution is noted in brackets. The third subseries, museums and galleries, contains primarily loan correspondence and sales and acquisition correspondence. The fourth subseries, academic institutions, includes questions and requests from student, exhibition and loan correspondence, and some academic gallery sales correspondence. There exists some overlap between series III.C, III.D, and III.E is noted in the folder descriptions when applicable.

Series IV: Photograph Files

Series IV contains a collection of photographs of specific artworks originally kept among the paper records rather than with the photo binders of Series VIII. It is organized alphabetically by artist last name, and occasionally includes some photographs of the artists themselves. The photographs are sometimes simply loose photographs while others are mounted to board, similar to those in Series VIII. While the materials in this series clearly originate from the mid-20th century, no information as to when the photographs were taken, printed, or bound, is present.

Series VIII: Photo Albums

Series VIII contains object photographs previously kept as a separate collection in the Photographic Archive in the Department of Rights and Reproductions. Upon the department's closure in 1992 they came to the archives with the rest of the Photographic Archive. All images were originally mounted in three-ring binders. While the materials in this series clearly originate from the mid-20th century, no information as to when the photographs were taken, printed, or bound, is present. The photo albums were arranged into four groups which have been sorted into their own subseries. The first includes installation photographs originally in a single album. The collection is incomplete as not all exhibitions are represented. The second subseries are photographs originally in a series of black binders organized alphabetically by artist. The black binders indicate works exhibited by Valentin in the Buchholz and Curt Valentin Galleries. The third subseries are photographs originally in a series of green binders organized alphabetically by artist. The green binders contain a general collection of works by artists represented by Valentin. The fourth series is a series of binders associated with collector David Thompson. They contain works by Paul Klee and Fernand Leger believed to be part of Thompson's private collection.

The final two subseries concern the corresponding negatives for the photographs in the albums, taken by photographer Adolph Studly. Studly created his own numbering system or organize his negatives which are organized by date taken, rather than by artist. Subseries VIII.E contains the card catalogue cards which detail the artist, artwork title, date, dimensions, and the Studly number. The cards only range from A-Lipchitz. The final subseries, VIII.F, contains the corresponding negatives.
