Sidetrack, built from modified turntable
and printer parts, is based on research
showing that work-at-home professionals
have trouble separating their
home and work lives, and in particular
that they spend most of their time
at their desks and not in other parts
of their homes. Areas throughout the
home (the kitchen, the office) are tracked
by sensors connected to a rotating table.
As the user moves from room to room,
the table plots a pattern, drawn by
pens attached to a moving arm, disclosing
what the designers call “pockets of
time” being devoted to various tasks.
Distractions, in this case, are not the
problem but are encouraged as healthy
breaks in rather monotonous days.
Each day is recorded on a separate
paper disk, allowing users to learn
from their own patterns.
