Nicknamed “ring of fire,” the Allianz
Arena, designed for Munich’s two
local soccer teams, features an outer
membrane constructed of 2,874 inflated
ETFE foil panels. Each panel contains
four lights that can be illuminated in
white, red, or blue, so that the panels
can be independently lit with the colors
of the home team. The stadium glows
red for FC Bayern München, blue for
TSV 1860 München, a checkerboard when
they play each other, and white for the
German national team or other matches.
Thus the arena wears the team colors,
embodying and magnifying the energy
of the spectators inside it.
