In autoreverse, five stop-motion sequences depict electric and electronic appliances deconstructing and then rebuilding themselves, accompanied by what designer Paul Kirps calls “electro-techno-mechanic” sounds that emphasize the objects’ surreal and redundant functions. To make these videos, Kirps searched for items of traditional household and office equipment, many of them now obsolete. The designer pays homage to objects lost in the name of progress. autoreverse is part of the collection of The Museum of Modern Art and the video can be seen in its entirety in the museum’s collection galleries.
