Custom software
The Word Lens app uses character-recognition software to instantaneously translate written words when the text is viewed through an iPhone or iPad2. One need only hold the smartphone up to the text and the words appear in a different language, while the rest of the image goes unchanged. As of July 2011, the app is available only for Spanish-English and English-Spanish translation, although the producers are planning to add new language packs soon.
