Luka Live is a fictional scenario that imagines what it would look like to “augment” our pets by embedding networked WiFi microchips under their skins. Luka is a friendly Dalmatian who also happens to be a “multifunctional pet offering enhanced features such as a ‘Personal Hotspot,’ ‘Secure Data Storer,’ and a ’Unique Podcaster.’” Luka’s owner advertises his dog’s services and has a remote device to manage Luka’s data and networks. Jain’s core question, however, revolves around what degree of control Luka’s owner can truly wield—and what implications augmenting our pets with smart technologies would have on the palatability of doing the same to human beings.
