Tapping into the history of Cineprobe—the landmark film program that ran at MoMA from 1968 to 2002 and prefigured our current Modern Mondays series—Currents traces the vibrant history of artist’s cinema and independent film in MoMA’s collection. Launched as a showcase for new American films in the spirited moment of 1968, and centered around the artists’ presence alongside their work, Cineprobe’s adventurous programming quickly engaged with social issues, performance, video, and alternative film production from around the world. For this series, 26 programs—including feature films and monographic and thematic groupings—pay tribute to the filmmakers who pushed the form to visual, personal, and political heights. Featuring rarities and premieres of MoMA preservations, in formats ranging from Super8 to 35mm, Currents looks back at an essential exhibition history and its unique impact on generations of moving-image artists and audiences.
