Citizens and Borders
Citizens and Borders is a series of discrete projects at MoMA related to works in the collection that offer a critical perspective on histories of migration, territory, and displacement. Over the last two years, the Museum has explored this theme through exhibitions, written commentary, and public programs such as On Permanence in Transit; A Conversation with Joseph Carens, Bouchra Khalili, and Samar Yazbek, Moderated by Bernard Haykel; and Patriot Games: Contextualizing Nationalism.
The musical component of Summer Thursdays 2017 was organized in collaboration with PopRally, in conjunction with the digital exhibition Crossing Borders: Immigration and American Culture. The musicians who performed all currently reside in the US but have roots in Africa, Asia, South America, North America, and Europe, and their individual journeys are expressed in music that blends sounds from home with those of this country. Participating musicians included ¡Aparato!, Alsarah and the Nubatones, Arooj Aftab, Banda Magda, Buscabulla, Helado Negro, Jojo Abot, The Kominas, and Madame Gandhi.
