Robert Kastler was appointed Director of The Museum of Modern Art’s Imaging and Visual Resources Department in 2017. He joined the Museum as a production manager in 2005. Kastler oversees the imaging of MoMA’s artworks and exhibitions, advanced imaging capabilities, the digital asset management system for the museum, and the global licensing of the museum’s digital files. To ensure that artworks’ digital surrogates conform to the highest standards, Kastler is an active participant in many organizations and conferences advocating for the research and development of cultural heritage imaging best practices and new technology.
Since 2016, Kastler has been on the steering committee of ImageMuse, a dedicated group of over 1,000 cultural heritage imaging professionals sharing knowledge and best practices, and advocating to elevate the field. He has taught at several universities, including the Ohio State University, where he received his BFA and MFA.
