For 80 years, through a laboratory-like, experimental approach to museum education fueled by continued research, The Museum of Modern Art has fulfilled its founding educational mission to ensure that people of all ages and abilities “enjoy, understand and use” the art of our time in ways that add value to their lives.
In 1937 a two-year pilot, the “Educational Project,” led to what is today MoMA’s Department of Education. As we look ahead to the completion of our building project in 2019, we continue to embrace the values at the heart of our work: experimentation and creativity; convening critical conversations about art and issues of our time; and increased accessibility through programs and resources that remove barriers to participation, and the adoption of new technologies that enable greater reach. The Department of Education has been recognized as a leader in the field thanks largely to an ethos of generosity; by sharing resources, techniques, and innovations worldwide, we continue to learn from and with people about why art matters in our world.
