Now in its 46th year, the renowned New Directors/New Films festival, presented jointly by The Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, introduces New York audiences to the work of emerging or not-yet-established filmmakers from around the world. The festival takes place at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center and at The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters at MoMA.
To get a sense of the illustrious lineage of the New Directors/New Films festival, check out the lineup
from 30 years ago. In 1987, the selections included Pedro Almodóvar’s Law of Desire, Sara Driver’s Sleepwalk, Lasse Hallström’s My Life as a Dog, Bruce Robinson’s Withnail & I, and Juzo Itami’s Tampopo. And that was barely a fourth of the lineup. The programmers of New Directors/New Films, which has been introducing New York audiences to important filmmakers since 1972, are as committed as ever to finding exciting talents whose work will stand the test of time. This year's lineup is a strikingly international one, reminding viewers that cinema is a global community. Films from China, Nepal, Portugal, Thailand, Tunisia, and Turkey sit alongside titles from France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the United States. The authenticity and integrity of these distinctive voices are so strong that we suspect you may be talking about a lot of them thirty years from now.
