The Victor D'Amico Papers document activities of the founding director of MoMA's Department of Education, and include photographs, correspondence, audio and videotapes, clippings, draft and completed publications, as well as personal documents, awards, and honors. They also provide information on D'Amico's non-MoMA involvement in education, including his professional writings, speeches, and conference presentations, especially related to the National Committee for Art Education. Most of the collection was received by the Museum Archives from Teachers College, to which it had been donated in 1987 by Victor D'Amico's widow Mabel. It also includes materials that had remained at MoMA after his retirement.
The collection is rich in photographic documentation of D'Amico's best-known programs at MoMA: classes and exhibitions of artwork created at the War Veterans' Art Center, People's Art Center, The Art Barge, and Children's Art Carnival (both at MoMA and overseas) in the 1950s and 1960s; and the extensive program of circulating exhibitions distributed through MoMA's New York City High Schools Program from the 1940s into the early 1970s. The range and variety of photographs are evidence of the extensive publicity that introduced and promoted these programs worldwide, helping to promulgate D'Amico's progressive ideal of art education for a range of populations: children, adults, families, veterans, and seniors.
The records are open for research and contain few restricted materials.
The Victor D'Amico Papers are the physical property of The Museum of Modern Art. Literary rights, including copyright, belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns.

The bulk of the Victor D'Amico Papers were received by the Museum Archives in 2011 from Columbia University Teachers' College, to which they had been donated by Mabel D'Amico after her husband's death in 1987. Beginning in 2007, MoMA, together with The Art Barge and Teachers' College, entered into a series of discussions regarding the Papers' ultimate location. The MoMA Archives was determined to be their logical location, due to the extensive documentation of Museum program activities contained within the Papers. Five boxes of materials were received from former MoMA art teacher Arlette Buchman in January 2012. That year, various materials stored at MoMA by the Department of Education and Photographic Archive were determined to have been previously separated from the D'Amico records and were included for processing with the Victor D'Amico Papers.
Materials have been rehoused in archival folders and appropriate-sized boxes, according to accepted professional practice. Paperclips and staples were removed. Photographs, transparencies, and negatives were rehoused, individually or in groups, in Mylar sleeves. Fragile and difficult to handle sizes of newspaper clippings have been preservation photocopied and the originals discarded. Other acidic materials were enclosed or isolated as appropriate. Personal and financial papers were evaluated for inclusion based on archival standards for the retention of records of enduring value. Water-damaged and mildewed transparencies were discarded. Images depicting student art work, which do not relate to specific programs or show students at work, have been transferred to the Department of Education for internal use. Meeting minutes have been removed per the Museum Archives' Access Policy.

The series includes a small amount of administrative material from the Department of Education during D'Amico's tenure. Notable are three folders (I.14-16) of correspondence and other information about the reconfiguration of the Department at D'Amico's retirement, and the discontinuation of onsite art classes at the Museum. Historical Note
D'Amico's first involvement at MoMA was as head of the Museum's Educational Project, a two-year pilot project (1937-1939) that was an outcome of the report on art education in museums funded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (see also Series VIII. Professional Involvement). The Department of Education was formally inaugurated in 1939; its services to high schools were termed The New York City High Schools Program (see Series II). |

Series II. New York City High Schools Program, [1940s]-1974 |
The series includes information on circulating exhibitions, teaching portfolios, slide sets, and other educational materials and their use in programs provided to the New York City public high schools by MoMA's Department of Education during and after D'Amico's tenure.
Historical Note
MoMA's New York City Public High Schools Program was formally inaugurated in 1937, as one of MoMA's newly formed Education Project's first initiatives. In cooperation with the New York City Board of Education (which, at that time, employed no art teachers), the Program provided circulating exhibitions and teaching materials (including slides, slide talks, teaching portfolios and models, and libraries of reproductions) to schools. It also held programs at the Museum that included opportunities for students to curate exhibitions (see Series VI. MoMA Exhibitions). At the Program's peak in 1957-1958, 59 schools were being provided with more than 100 circulating items.
Arrangement
The series is organized into two subseries:
Subseries II.A. General Background, [1940s]-1971 |
Subseries II.A. General Background, [1940s]-1971 |
Scope and Content |
The subseries includes administrative information on the Program, as well as photographic documentation of teaching materials and some exhibitions. No explanations are provided for the abbreviations E.P. and V.P. in the records, but they appear to relate to exhibition and visual materials, respectively. |

Some exhibitions were versions of those mounted at MoMA, and some were created especially for the Program (including Modern Art of the Small House and City Apartment, Design for the Theatre, Poster Design Today, Contrasts in Painting). The materials include checklists, intra-MoMA requisitions for photographic reproductions and shipping, as well as correspondence with schools that received the materials. In folder II.B.81, High School Program Coordinator Sue Raices explains why the Program was discontinued in the early 1970s: "While exhibitions were once an important part of the program, the vastly changed school population and sometimes difficult situation in the schools have caused a shift in emphasis. Today the schools are finding more and more need for audio-visual materials." |

Series III. Art Education at MoMA, 1920s-1982 (bulk 1944-1968) |
This series documents the variety of art classes for families, children, seniors, and teachers held at MoMA during D'Amico's tenure. It includes predominantly photographs of class participants and their work, as well as announcements and programs of classes, text and images used for slide talks presented at MoMA and elsewhere, and recorded presentations.
Historical Note
In 1944, D'Amico initiated the Museum's War Veterans' Art Center, a project that became the People's Art Center in 1948. The Center's classes moved in 1951 to the second and third floors of 21 West 53rd Street. As part of architect Philip Johnson's redesign of the Museum, completed in 1964, D'Amico designed classrooms, furniture, and equipment for new spaces in the Museum's east wing.
In 1960, D'Amico became President and Director of the Institute of Modern Art, a separate non-profit organization that assumed responsibility for the Museum's school program and other educational activities until his retirement in 1969, when classes for individual students were discontinued.
Arrangement
Administrative material pertaining to the Department of Education has been moved to Series I. Department of Education Administrative. For classes taught at the Art Barge see Series V. Art Barge; for programs for New York City public high schools see Series II. New York City Public High Schools Program; for publications of the War Veterans' Art Center, see Series VII. MoMA Publications.
Images depicting student artwork, which do not either relate to specific programs or show students at work, have been transferred to the Department of Education for internal use.
The series is organized into three subseries:
Subseries III.A. War Veterans' Art Center, 1944-1949 |
Subseries III.A. War Veterans' Art Center, 1944-1949 |

Historical Note |
The War Veterans' Art Center was established in 1944 at the suggestion of MoMA trustees Mrs. John D. (Abby Aldrich) Rockefeller, Jr., and Stephen Clark, who both supported it financially. Housed initially in a loft across from the Museum at 681 Fifth Avenue, the Center provided classes in painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, printing, and woodworking to almost 1,500 veterans in its four years of existence. The War Veterans' Art Center was succeeded by the People's Art Center in 1948. |

Series IV. Children's Art Carnival and Caravan, 1940s-1979 (bulk 1942-1965) |
The subseries documents, mostly in the form of photographs, the iterations of the Children's Art Carnival at MoMA and its various international locations; the television program "Through the Enchanted Gate," envisaged as a continuation of the Carnival for home use; and the Children's Art Caravan: a planned but never realized mobile version of the Carnival. It includes plans and blueprints for the Carnival and Caravan locations, furnishings, and educational materials.
Arrangement
The series is arranged in three subseries:
Subseries IV.A. Children's Art Carnival, 1940s-1979 (bulk 1942-1965) |

Historical Note |
Among D'Amico's most widely known and experienced innovations was the creation of both the space and opportunity for children to create art, in a location and with equipment and supplies specifically designed by him and dedicated only to that end. Referred to here as the Children's Art Carnival, it was termed, at various times, the Children's Holiday Circus, Children's Holiday Carnival, Children's Festival of Modern Art, and Children's Art Carnival. The first Children's Holiday Carnival at MoMA opened in 1942, and was held annually at the Museum until 1952, and after 1955, often in conjunction with similarly themed exhibitions (see Series VI. MoMA Exhibitions). |
Designed in two parts, the Children's Art Carnival consisted of an area with so-called motivations, followed by one in which art materials and teachers were available. According to D'Amico's Experiments in Creative Art Teaching, this would show "how children respond to art experiences under ideal teaching in a stimulating environment…" The Carnival accommodated children who could fit through a cut-out silhouette of their maximum sizes that formed the Carnival's entrance. The television program "Through the Enchanted Gate" (see Subseries IV.B) was conceived as the Children's Art Carnival for home consumption by families. |
In 1957, the Children's Art Carnival traveled to Barcelona and Milan as a feature of the International Samples Fair. For six months in 1958, it was part of the American pavilion at the Brussels World's Fair. There, close to 17,000 children from around the world participated, as well as 2,000 teachers. In March 1962, at the invitation of Indira Gandhi, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy presented a version of the Carnival in New Delhi to the children of India, on behalf of the International Council of The Museum of Modern Art and the Asia Society. D'Amico attended its opening in October 1963. It traveled to the major cities of India, where it was visited by an estimated 38,000 children, before being returned to New Delhi as a training center for Indian teachers. |
After D'Amico's retirement, the Children's Art Carnival opened in permanent form in Harlem in 1969, under the direction of Betty Blayton Taylor. Its first three years were funded through a committee chaired by Mrs. John D. (Blanchette) Rockefeller III. |

Subseries IV.C. Children's Art Caravan, 1960s-1974 |
Historical Note |
The Art Caravan was designed as a mobile version of the Children's Art Carnival, entirely designed by D'Amico and championed by him after his retirement as Director of the Department of Education. To be contained in a pair of trailers, it would incorporate both a motivations area and an area for children to work creatively under the supervision of trained teachers, similar to the Art Carnival. The project was initially supported by a grant from the John D. Rockefeller, 3rd, Fund in 1968. Subsequently, both the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John D. Rockefeller, 3rd, Fund had promised additional grants, contingent on matching funding. By 1971 MoMA's funding priorities had changed and did not include further support of the Caravan, at which time D'Amico resigned from the project. |

Series V. Art Barge, 1950s-2011 (bulk 1955-1980s) |
The subseries includes some administrative records (registration forms, expenses) and extensive photographic documentation of summer art programs, including students at work, exhibitions, and social events, held at the Art Barge during and after D'Amico's tenure at MoMA.
Historical Note
MoMA began summer painting classes for adults on eastern Long Island in 1955, at Ashawaugh Hall, East Hampton, near the summer home of Victor and Mabel D'Amico. The Institute of Modern Art, formed at MoMA in 1960, ran summer programs starting in 1962 on the decommissioned U.S. Navy coal barge Kearsarge, which had been towed from New Jersey to Napeague Harbor in Amagansett, Long Island. This location came to be called The Art Barge. In the off-seasons, D'Amico gathered interested adult students, into groups variously named Kearsarge or Napeague, in New York City for criticism and art review.
In 1971, The Napeague Institute of Art was founded as an independent organization under charter from the State of New York Board of Regents, with its own board of trustees and officers, dedicated to "the creative development of laymen, students, teachers, and professional artists, helping them to achieve a richer way of life and make a more meaningful contribution to society." It ran summer programs at the Art Barge (which it leased from MoMA until October 1982) for senior citizens, school teachers, adults, and children. Some teacher education classes there were offered for credit through New York University (1963-1966) and Southampton College of Long Island University (beginning in 1967). In 1982, The Napeague Institute of Art was renamed the Victor D'Amico Institute of Art. It continues to administer summer programs at The Art Barge under that name.
Arrangement
Many of the color slides in this series were originally housed unsorted in large boxes, unidentified as to content or date. They are now organized generally into groupings by apparent subject and year printed on the slide housing; researchers should note that these designations are approximate. Images of unidentified art works have been transferred to the Department of Education for internal use. Meeting minutes have been removed per the Museum Archives' Access Policy. |

Series VI. Exhibitions, 1938-1969 |
The series includes information on exhibitions, both at MoMA and some that circulated, organized by the Department of Education or with its significant collaboration. It includes both numbered MoMA exhibitions and those mounted in the Young People's Gallery and other spaces, which were not included in the Museum's chronological numbering system. The documentation is almost entirely in the form of photographs (installation views, exhibition panels, and individual items on view); there is minimal administrative or organizational information. For exhibitions that circulated to schools, see Series II. New York City High Schools Program. Some folders in Series IV. Children's Art Carnival, and Series III.A. War Veterans' Art Center, may also include exhibition-related information.
Historical Note
The Young People's Gallery opened at MoMA on November 1, 1939, as a "special exhibition space, designed to serve the needs of art students between the ages of 12 and 18." It was an outgrowth of the New York City High Schools Program (see Series II). All of its rotating exhibitions were "selected for, or by, pupils in the art classes of secondary schools. Occasionally a showing of their own work will be held. Demonstrations in various fields of art will be given by well-known artists and followed by discussion of techniques, media, and other matters of interest to young art students." (MoMA press release, "Young People's Gallery Opens at Museum of Modern Art with Unusual Exhibition," October 30, 1939). Special equipment used for display in the gallery was designed by D'Amico, including convertible easels and easily reconfigured chains of desks.
Arrangement
The subseries is organized chronologically by exhibition. For many exhibitions, there are two sets of images: one of mounted prints from various series of albums and one of unmounted prints. These have been combined into a single folder where space allows. |

Series VII. MoMA Publications, 1941-1972 |
The series includes documentation of MoMA publications both written and collaborated on by D'Amico, as well as others found in his files.
Historical Note
Various MoMA publications, including How to Make Pottery and Ceramic Sculpture: 20 Graded Projects; How to Make Modern Jewelry; and How to Make Objects of Wood, originated as pamphlets created by, and based on work done by students at, the War Veterans' Art Center (see Series III.A).
Arrangement
The series includes some visual materials once housed in MoMA's Photographic Archive, which had been placed there based on the earlier organization of documentation by material type rather than in context with items from similar sources. |

Subseries VIII.C. National Committee on Art Education, 1943-1969 |
Historical Note |
The Committee on Art Education grew indirectly from the Veteran's Art Center (later People's Art Center [see Series III]) at MoMA and was initially sponsored by the Museum. At its first meeting in 1943, D'Amico noted that "This committee will, for the first time, represent the art teacher through his medium of expression…it admits as members only those who take an active role." Membership in the organization reached nearly 500 by the end of the 1940s, and its officers in that and the next decade included Dorothy Knowles, Edith Mitchell, Charles Cook, Arthur Young, and Robert Iglehart. In conjunction with some of its meetings held at MoMA, special exhibitions were designed and installed in the Museum, including Developing Creativeness In Children [MoMA Exh. #575, March 15-April 17, 1955] and Art Education for Every Child [MoMA Exh. #665, May 6-August 14, 1960] (see Series VI for materials related to these exhibitions). Between its 14th annual conference in 1956 and its 15th in 1957, the organization was renamed the National Committee on Art Education. In June 1965, the Institute for the Study of Art Education was formed as its offspring and successor, which functioned in reduced size and scope until 1976. |
