![]() Joan Jonas In this work, Jonas wanted to create “a magic show where the woman would be the transformer, or the one who is transformed,” she has said. “It’s the shamanistic idea—the performer goes through the actions so that the audience can experience them also.” As her alter ego, Organic Honey, Jonas kneels on the floor over a piece of white paper, under an overhead camera. She slips back her mask to wear it like a hat, then draws a dog’s head–marking the top half of the image on the bottom half of the paper, and the bottom half of the image on the top half of the paper. On the monitor, the two halves of the drawing come together. As she draws, Jonas’s hands and arms become visible, and, occasionally, her mask seems to look up at the camera.
