“Penny Lane,” recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions and released as a single in February 1967, was co-written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon in alternating verse/chorus form. The song shares its name with a street in the band’s hometown of Liverpool, England. This film, a forerunner of the music video, aired on the British television show Top of the Pops in the late 1960s.
