![]() Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) An inventive singer and harmonica player known in rock circles by his pseudonym, Captain Beefheart performed with the ensemble The Magic Band from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. His experimental compositions, often characterized by unusual fusions of changing time signatures and surreal lyrics, have made an indelible mark on punk and New Wave music. This music video, which aired on public-access cable television around Los Angeles, is a wry early example of performance video. View Schedule Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) (American, born 1941).
