![]() Lucinda Childs Originally shot in 16mm film, Vehicle documents Childs’s performance in 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering, a series of performances in October 1966 for which artists were paired with leading high-tech engineers. Her project involved swinging three red firefighter’s buckets, which she had hung from scaffolding, in front of a 70 kHz Doppler sonar system specially designed by Bell Laboratories engineers for the occasion. As Childs swung the buckets around within the ultrasonic beams, the frequency of the sounds transmitted fell into the audible range and were transmitted to twelve speakers around the building.
