Oil on canvas
One of Cubism’s most influential and prolific theorists, Gleizes co-authored with fellow artist Jean Metzinger the landmark treatise Du Cubisme in 1912. He began this portrait two years later, inspired by composer-conductor Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka (1911), having carefully developed what he described as its “rhythmic relations of objects to objects” over a series of studies. Here, he employs vibrant, saturated planes of color to represent Stravinsky, who appears at the right in formal attire reaching out toward open sheet music.
