Biographical Note

Carla Stellweg is a writer, independent curator and former gallery owner born in Bandung, Indonesia and raised in Mexico City, Mexico. She held a variety of curatorial positions in Mexico and the United States at The Rufino Tamayo Museum, Mexico City and Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art (MOCHA), Bronx, NY. In 1973, Carla Stellweg and Fernando Gamboa co-founded Artes Visuales, an avant-garde magazine. Between 1983 and 1985, Ms. Stellweg co-owned and operated Stellweg-Seguy gallery, and from 1989 to 1997, the gallery Carla Stellweg Latin American & Contemporary Art. Throughout her career she published works focused on Latin America and Latino artists.

The Carla Stellweg Papers include a collection of papers of writer, curator, and gallerist Carla Stellweg including correspondence, exhibition announcements, invitations, and other ephemera documenting her gallery work and personal and professional writings. In Spanish and English.

Provenance

The Carla Stellweg Papers were acquired by the MoMA Library in 2015 and transferred to the MoMA Archives in 2023.

The collection as a whole is in good condition. In processing, staples and other metal fasteners were removed.
