The Museum of Modern Art celebrates its 90th anniversary on November 7, 2019. This landmark birthday, just as we are opening our newly expanded museum, made me curious about how we celebrated our 10th anniversary in 1939. That first milestone came as we opened our first purpose-built building. The slide show below features documents from our Archives to tell that story.

Special thanks to Christina Eliopoulos, archives fellow for Research and Reference, for all her assistance throughout this project. A related exhibition, 1939, is currently on view through the end of the year in the Archives, Library, and Research Collections reading room on the sixth floor of MoMA’s Cullman Education and Research Building.
