“I have been leading comic-making sessions for close to 20 years now, working across Scotland in schools, galleries, hospitals, prisons, and community settings,” says cartoonist and performer Malcy Duff. “My therapeutic approach uses comic book storytelling as a form of narrative art therapy.” Duff’s comics include The Marge, The Liminal Sneeze, The Heroic Mosh of Mary’s Son, and A 52 Second Silence for Topsy. For this month’s Drawn to MoMA, he returned to a recurring character. “I created the Uncertain Man for a lecture on my cartooning in 2022,” says Duff. “The Uncertain Man doesn’t know where he’s going, and so is the ideal guide to a place of not knowing—a place reflective of the art therapy space and the comic panel itself. I hope the publication of this story during Mental Wellness Month can encourage making and creating comics as an expressive outlet, whatever character you choose to be.”
