The title inscription "Compositie 5" suggests that the painting may have been included in the exhibition Hollandsche Kunstenaarskring: 2de tentoonstelling, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, March 11-April 2, 1916. The painting was still in the possession of Jakob and Maaike van Domselaer in 1946: Domselaer lent the painting to the memorial exhibition Piet Mondriaan herdenkingstententoonstelling, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, November 6-December 16, 1946.
