Noémi Raymond. Circles. c.1941

Noémi Raymond Circles c.1941

  • Not on view

The simplicity of this textile pattern was inspired by Raymond's experience with block–printed textiles in Japan during the 1930s. She had a close working relationship with her architect husband, Antonin Raymond, and her textiles were frequently used in the interiors of buildings he designed. "The doing away with all but essentials, or discipline, is the basis of Japanese charm... All is the direct result of a necessity, be it material or spiritual," the Raymonds observed in 1935. This fabric was part of a prizewinning series submitted to MoMA's Organic Design competition, though only her husband’s name appeared in the credits.

How we identified these works

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
