In 1957, shortly before she turned 80, Gabriele Münter recalled painting a landscape half a century earlier. In 1908, while in the countryside of southern Germany, Münter came across an evening sight that caught her eye: a road and an inn backed by blue mountains and red clouds.

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
