Although frequently credited independently, Eames, a heroic figure in twentieth-century American design, worked with a large team to realize the winning designs for this competition. Collaborators included his wife, Ray Eames, six designers from the Eames office, and four members of the Department of Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles. The team was co-awarded second prize in the Seating Units category for their innovative molded-fiberglass chairs, including this yellow side chair. These works were considered a fulfillment of the ideas developed by Eames and Eero Saarinen for MoMA's Organic Design in Home Furnishings competitionin 1940.
