Jiro Takamatsu Slack of Net 1969

Takamatsu’s primary materials here are cotton rope and twine—materials that, the artist explained, “one could find anywhere. The viewer might find a similar kind of string in real life. I thought, that’s alright, if that’s the case.” Takamatsu was a key member of the Mono-ha movement in Japan, which focused on the properties of raw, natural, and industrial materials. Slack of Net emphasizes the unrestrained quality of rope and twine by accentuating their inability to conform to the rigid, organizing structure of a grid.
