Jacob Lawrence. The railroad stations were at times so over-packed with people leaving that special guards had to be called in to keep order. 1940–41. Casein tempera on hardboard, 12 × 18" (30.5 × 45.7 cm). The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gift of Mrs. David M. Levy. © 2023 Jacob Lawrence/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

Arranged in loosely chronological order, each of the presentations on this floor explores an individual topic. A room may be devoted to an artist, a specific medium or discipline, a particular place in a moment in time, or a shared creative idea. An ongoing program of frequent reinstallation will feature a wide range of artworks in new combinations—a reminder that countless ideas and histories can be explored through the Museum’s dynamic collection.

These galleries are conceived by teams of curators from all fields and at all levels of seniority collaborating closely to share expertise and viewpoints. All collection presentations are overseen by Christophe Cherix, The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints, Stuart Comer, The Lonti Ebers Chief Curator of Media and Performance, Roxana Marcoci, The David Dechman Senior Curator and Acting Chief Curator of Photography, Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film, Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, and Ann Temkin, The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, with Heidi Hirschl Orley, Assistant Director, Curatorial Affairs.

Support for the collection is provided by the Annual Exhibition Fund.
