Anxiety around sex and sexual difference has been a dominant, if subtly coded, theme in horror films since well before Alfred Hitchcock made a cross-dressing mama’s boy his “hero” in 1960’s Psycho. The ways the genre has served to question the heteronormative is one of the least acknowledged characteristics of its evolution.
