In the monumental Untitled (2016), Miller’s repetitive application of marks creates a rich but ultimately undecipherable field. A tangle of thin ink scrawls establishes a ground, over which he adds a layer of bolder black lines. On top of this dance delicate wisps of luminescent yellow paint that activate the surface. This topmost layer reflects the artist’s obsession with electrical objects such as light bulbs and sockets, to which he responds in densely graphic drawings like this one.

Miller is affiliated with the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, which provides studio space and materials for artists with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities. In his twenty-five years working with the nonprofit, he has developed a complex visual language that straddles expression, abstraction, and accumulation.
