The Ornithologist, winner of the Best Director prize at the Locarno Film Festival, brings together João Pedro Rodrigues’s strongest obsessions: the erotic power of religious and traditional symbols, perilous human attractions, our transgressive sexual nature, and a fascination with birds. Shot in Northern Portugal, not far from the location of Oliveira’s The Rite of Spring, this tale of one man’s solitary trip to observe nature’s creatures turns into an adventure of mystical and sacrificial proportions. Rodrigues’s gaze and technique are as refined as ever in a powerful, semi-biographical portrait.
