A Northern Portuguese community’s reenactment of the Passion of Christ captures Manoel de Oliveira’s obsession with desire, spirituality, grace, and the biggest of all plays: life itself. A radical collision of documentary and fiction, theater and cinema, Rite of Spring is one of the most remarkable depictions of Portugal’s hybrid, artisanal film tradition. With António Reis as Oliveira’s assistant director, its formal ambition influenced the likes of Miguel Gomes and João Pedro Rodrigues and produced a work that still feels ahead of its time. The Hunt —shown here in its uncensored version (censors made Oliveira shoot a happier alternative ending)—a film about survival and cruelty with a bold, political undercurrent, shows Oliveira’s love for Luis Buñuel, as a young drifter drowns in quicksand as an impoverished community desperately tries to save him.
