Title sequence from Uptight. USA. 1968. Animated by Faith Hubley, John Hubley. 3 min.
The Hubleys created the animated opening credits for director Jules Dassin’s controversial feature about Black militancy following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray Hubley recalls, “As I’m sure my brother Mark does, I remember vividly romping around a Long Island parking lot—playing, chasing, carrying on—while our Dad filmed us with a 16mm camera. This footage was the basis for the two young figures clambering across these gorgeous urban backgrounds to the strains of Booker T Jones and his M.G.s.”
Of Men and Demons. USA. 1968. Directed by Faith Hubley, John Hubley. 10 min.
“I’ve been… trying to understand time in this other sense, in the sense that our moment can’t be that magnificent. It’s just a moment…what about our ancestors, our true ancestors? I became very interested in the past, which is, curiously enough, very modern” (Faith Hubley). Summing up his parents’ attitude toward their work, Mark Hubley says they “felt animation as a medium was ideally suited for exploring relationships, social morality, politics, and the human condition.”
