Broadway Danny Rose. USA. Written and directed by Woody Allen. With Allen, Mia Farrow, Nick Apollo Forte. 35mm. 84 min.
Ellen Lewis got her start assisting the great casting director Juliet Taylor on Broadway Danny Rose. Though she didn’t get a credit on the film, she nonetheless associates it with her love of casting and her relationship with Taylor for the next eight-plus years. Getting to know Robert Greenhut, Woody Allen’s producer at the time, also led to her collaborations with Martin Scorsese and Penny Marshall. The film’s frequently hilarious set pieces leave you with nostalgic cravings for the Golden Age of television and a Carnegie Deli pastrami and corned beef combo. “I did the search for the Variety Acts.” Lewis recalls, “and went to Colony Records with Gail Sicilia, a producer, where we found Nick Apollo Forte’s album.”
