Attack the Block. 2011. UK. Written and directed by Joe Cornish. With John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, Luke Treadaway, Jumayn Hunter and Nick Frost. 88 min.
Writer/director Joe Cornish (with an assist from executive producer Edgar Wright) burst onto the scene in 2011 with Attack the Block, one of the most exciting, breathlessly paced genre debuts in decades. When apelike aliens start their global invasion at a London council estate tower block, Earth’s first line of defense is a group of would-be criminal teens led by the unflappable Moses (a magnetic John Boyega, in his screen debut). Abetted by a hapless NHS nurse (future Doctor Who Jody Whittaker) and hampered by a motley assortment of weed dealers and gang members, our unlikely heroes use samurai swords, fireworks, and considerable pluck to fight for humanity’s future. Maybe next time the savage space-apes should attack the suburbs.
