Spring. 2014. USA. Directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead. Screenplay by Benson. With Lou Taylor Pucci, Nadia Hilker. 109 min.
“Are you a vampire, werewolf, zombie, witch, or alien?,” asks the male lead in a revelatory moment of Spring. In horror films, sexual desire typically ends in death. So learns a troubled twenty-something who escapes his lonely, aimless life in America for Italy, where he meets a beautiful young creature with an ancient past and deadly supernatural needs. Smartly splicing horror with a star-crossed love story, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead skillfully avoid parody with their measured use of body horror, a witty script, and naturalistic performances. The film’s treatment of heteronormative and cultural difference, so often a root theme of the genre, is genuinely sweet and romantic.
