In his previous feature, Dawson City: Frozen Time, Bill Morrison explored the material effects of permafrost on reels of nitrate celluloid long buried and forgotten. His latest film, Village Detective: a song cycle, meditates on decay of a more recent vintage—reels of a 1969 Soviet comedy rescued from their own watery grave by Icelandic fishing boats—and on the fleeting fame of Mihail Žarov, a cherished Russian actor, after the collapse of the Soviet empire.
