Pedro Almodovar doesn’t shy away from social or political critique in his films, but never before has he so directly confronted the murderous history of the Spanish Civil War—and the secrets so many families have kept hidden for generations. This history informs another story of family (in this case maternal) secrets that convulse the lives of two new mothers (Penelope Cruz and Milena Smit who play off of each other with fantastic intensity). A lush, twisty melodrama deftly executed by a master filmmaker at the height of his powers, Parallel Mothers will enthrall Almodovar’s most ardent admirers and welcome those who had yet to be seduced.
