Moving from documentary to her first narrative feature, writer-director Tatiana Huezo retains a true-to-life urgency in the story of three young women navigating life in the narco-controlled foothills of Mexico. Jumping between childhood and adolescence, the film harrowingly balances the frustrations of youth with the dangers of kidnapping and sexual enslavement that these (and many other) girls face. Rendered in the lush colors of forest towns, with an authentically lived-in feel, this intimate story makes an immense impact.
