L’assassin habite au 21 (The Murderer Lives at Number 21). 1942. France. Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. Screenplay by Henri-Georges Clouzot, Stanislas-André Steeman. With Pierre Fresnay, Suzy Delair, Jean Tissier. 84 min.

Clouzot’s first film as a director is a sequel to The Last One of the Six, with Pierre Fresnay’s sly commissioner going undercover as a clergyman to investigate a series of killings. The clues point to the claustrophobic Pension Mimosas, where the eccentric residents include the commissioner’s own brassy mistress, an aspiring chanteuse (Suzy Delair).
