Le dernier des six (The Last One of the Six). 1941. France. Directed by Georges Lacombe. Screenplay by Henri-Georges Clouzot, based on the novel by Stanislas-André Steeman. With Pierre Fresnay, Michèle Alfa, Suzy Delair. 90 min.

Produced during the Occupation by the German-controlled studio Continental Films, this seemingly innocent whodunit carries the subtext of its time, with a script by Clouzot that dramatizes division and betrayal. When six friends, who have agreed to split the proceeds of a financial windfall, begin dying one by one, a phlegmatic police commissioner (Fresnay) reluctantly investigates.
