Fist of Legend (精武英雄). 1994. Hong Kong. Directed by Gordon Chan. Martial Arts choreography by Yuen Woo-ping. With Jet Li, Chin Siu-ho, Shinobu Nakayama. DCP courtesy American Genre Film Archive. In Cantonese; English subtitles. 103 min.
This reimagining of Bruce Lee’s 1972 classic Fist of Fury stars Jet Li as Chen Zhen, a martial arts student who returns home to a Japanese-occupied Shanghai to investigate his master’s suspicious death. Where Lee’s performance channeled anti-imperialist rage and raw intensity, Li brings cool intelligence, precision, and quiet restraint to the role. Yuen Woo-ping’s action direction favors extended takes and wide framing, letting every strike and counter register with crystalline clarity. That commitment to visible, coherent combat captivated the Wachowskis, who credited the film as their inspiration for recruiting Yuen as action choreographer for The Matrix. Fist of Legend remains a benchmark of modern martial arts cinema, and one of Li’s defining performances.
