Kill Bill: Volume 2. 2004. USA. Directed by Quentin Tarantino. Screenplay by Tarantino, Uma Thurman. Martial Arts Advisor Yuen Woo-ping. With Thurman, David Carradine, Gordon Liu Chia-hui. 35mm. In English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish; English subtitles. 137 min.
Originally conceived as a single film, the four-hour-plus Kill Bill was split into two volumes released six months apart. Volume 2 completes the Bride’s (Uma Thurman) quest for revenge, turning inward from the operatic violence of the first installment to focus on the history, training, and emotional bonds that shaped her. Yuen Woo-ping’s choreography anchors the transformation, revealing in flashbacks her brutal training under kung fu master Pai Mei, played by legendary Shaw Brothers star Gordon Liu Chia-hui (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter). Combining Yuen’s traditional martial discipline with Quentin Tarantino’s Western aesthetic, Volume 2 delivers a character-focused resolution to the Bride’s journey.
