A landmark in the careers of Yuen Woo-ping and Jackie Chan, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow marked Yuen’s directorial debut and launched Chan to instant stardom, heralding the arrival of a new kung fu icon in the wake of Bruce Lee’s untimely death in 1973. Blending intricate martial arts choreography with physical comedy, Yuen forged the formula that would define Chan’s screen persona and propel his international career. Chan, as an underdog who must master his fighting skills to defend his martial arts school from a rival clan, stars opposite the inimitable Yuen Siu-tien, Yuen Woo-ping’s father, a celebrated Peking Opera performer, actor, and martial arts director whose mentorship profoundly shaped his son’s trajectory.
