Enjoy a performance of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego, recorded from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera as part of the company’s award-winning Live in HD series of cinema transmissions. The screening will be preceded by an introduction from Jon Bausor, the set and co-costume designer of the opera.
Featuring a libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz, this magical-realist portrait of two of Mexico’s most iconic artists follows Frida Kahlo, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, as she leaves the underworld on the Day of the Dead to reunite with Diego Rivera, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Kahlo and Rivera’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
This event is a part of the MoMA exhibition Frida and Diego: The Last Dream, a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera. The presentation features artworks by Kahlo and Rivera in an elaborate setting designed by Jon Bausor. For both the opera and installation, Bausor evokes the artists’ lives and artworks in his theatrical designs.
