The Zanj Revolution (Revolution Zendj). 2013. Algeria/France/Lebanon/Qatar. Directed by Tariq Teguia. In Arabic, French; English subtitles. 137 min.

With Fethi Ghares, Fadi Abi Samra, Diana Sabri. Teguia returns to MoMA with his most recent award-winning feature (Grand Jury Prize, Belfort IFF EntreVues, 2013). Encountering splinter-group unrest in present-day southern Algeria, a solitary journalist, Ibn Battuta, seeks to find the truth behind the stories of a ninth-century rebellion that began in Iraq and spread throughout the Mesopotamian region. His restless search takes him from Algeria to Lebanon to Iraq, where his wanderings lead to encounters with American and British mercenaries, student revolutionaries, and other independent seekers.
