The Lost Film. 2003. Lebanon/France. Written and directed by Joana Hadjithomas, Khalil Joreige. In French, Arabic; English subtitles. 42 min.
One year after their first feature film, Around the Pink House, mysteriously disappears during a film run in Yemen on the 10th anniversary of the country’s reunification in 2000, Lebanese filmmakers Hadjithomas and Joreige decide to track the print. Their search follows the bus route from Aden to Sanaa, where they visit the theaters in which their film was shown and are drawn to observe and take part in other Yemeni activities along the route. Slowly, a picture of film culture and image making in this Arab country emerges, as does a personal portrait of Yemen at a pivotal moment in the Middle East. By the end of their journey, the filmmakers just may have figured out what happened to their film.
