A Perfect Day. 2005. Lebanon/France. Written and directed by Joana Hadjithomas, Khalil Joreige. In Arabic; English subtitles. 88 min.

With Ziad Saad, Julia Kassar. A mother and son cling to each other, caught in an emotional bind. Riad, her husband and his father, was kidnapped in 1988 and has been missing ever since. Their lives are spent in indecision and guilt; they are afraid to let go of hope, and unable to start a new life without him. The film follows them through one tortuous day, when they take the first tentative steps that will make it possible to mourn and, eventually, heal.

This film accompanies Flaherty at MoMA: The Scent of Places.
