2008. Algeria/France. Directed by Tariq Teguia. With Kader Affak, Ines Rose Djakou, Ahmed Benaissa. Tequia's second feature revolves around a disillusioned and soon-to-be-divorced land surveyor who takes a job in the remote desert region of Ouarsenis to work on mapping out an electrical grid. His presence in this particular Algerian region, known as a stronghold for Islamist militants, soon attracts the mistrust of local residents and state security. He remains aloof, but begins to identify with the migrants who traverse the land to cross sub-Saharan Africa on their way to Morocco and beyond. Scenes of intellectuals in intimate political debates appear at intervals throughout the narrative. In Arabic, French; English subtitles. 138 min.
