Marcia Nuziale (The Wedding March). 1966. Italy. Directed by Marco Ferreri. Screenplay by Rafael Azcona, Diego Fabbri. With Ugo Tognazzi, Shirley Anne Field, Alexandra Stewart, Gaia Germani. DCP courtesy Cinecittà. In Italian; English subtitles. 89 min.
The Wedding March features Ugo Tognazzi playing his signature sardonic maschio alpha character, an onscreen persona that brought the Italian actor fame during the commedia all’italiana era—and made him a prime participant in Marco Ferreri’s cinema. Tognazzi leads the audience through four sketches that explore the peculiarities of bourgeois married life, with all its oddities of desire, boredom, infidelity, and bizarre fantasy. The film includes an episode shot in New York City and a final chapter in which Carlo Rambaldi’s life-sized inflatable dolls convey a strange vision of a sexual future.
