Carlo Rambaldi won his second Best Visual Effects Oscar for what is arguably his most memorable contribution to film history: a short, wide-eyed, long-necked animatronic extraterrestrial who flew from a distant planet and became best friends with another ugly duckling: a lonely 10-year-old boy with an absent father and a rich imagination. In addition to their initials, E.T. and Elliott share compassionate hearts, expressive faces, a capacity for friendship, and a deep yearning to find their true home in a world where fantasy must compensate for a disappointing reality.
