The plot of Planet of the Vampires sounds like a Euro mash-up of Alien and Night of the Living Dead: astronauts of the future go temporarily nuts and become killer zombies. Despite the slightly cheesy, positively bizarre sci-fi horror story, come for the Bava visuals, created on colorful sound stages and inspired by pulp magazines and 1960s comic books. Carlo Rambaldi’s giant alien skeletons evoke an otherworldly terror he would tap into once again on Alien more than a decade later.
